Marcy with SKIN AGAINST METAL
In 2015, two talented musicians — Nanette Garcia and Maurice Minichino of SKIN AGAINST METAL — invited me to collaborate with them. (I had worked with them previously, when my live painting performance group (EYE) had done a large mural at their headquarters — during an event featuring their music.)
This new collaboration was to be different! We decided to combine my spoken-word performance art with their music. The result was called Madness and Nudity: Women in Art. For the first presentation of this program, we focused attention upon the three of us, and the results were wonderful. However, for an encore presentation in 2016, we decided to expand the line-up of performers. Here’s the description of the program in its fuller incarnation, which will be presented at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in 2016:
Madness and Nudity: Women in Art is a provocative program of music, dance, video and performance art. The event is structured as a sequence of original musical compositions, each followed by a spoken-word performance. In these spoken-word pieces, Marcy B. Freedman gives voice to a diverse spectrum of women who have appeared nude in famous works of art. Using her knowledge of art history, as well as her imagination, Freedman has developed a compelling “personal statement” for a Paleolithic woman, an Italian Renaissance aristocrat, a 19th century French prostitute, and an iconic female artist of the 20th century.
The experimental instrumentation of Maurice Minichino provides the perfect backdrop for vocalist Nanette Garcia, whose lyrics and performance style are a reflection of her willingness to embrace her wildest creative impulses. Video projections, dance, and live, improvisational drawing enhance these musical performances by SKIN AGAINST METAL. The result is a multimedia experience that celebrates the power of madness in art and highlights the accomplishments of women artists in our midst.
Dancers: Mary Sofianos and Beverly Lopez. Additional performance artist: Jaanika Peerna
