Bring a Friend
It has become a tradition for me to present an interactive performance in honor of Valentine’s Day. For my 2014 presentation, I decided to make a slight departure from my usual one-on-one approach by requesting that all participants bring a friend or a spouse or a child or a lover or a sibling — whomever! So, a few days prior to Valentine’s Day, I sat at a cozy coffee shop from 10am to 4pm, interacting with wonderful people of all ages. At the start of each encounter, I invited each participant to jot down one thing that he or she liked (or loved!) about the other participant. Thereafter, I asked each participant to promise to share the written comment with person described on Valentine’s Day. After this initial activity, I encouraged the participants to chat about the nature of their relationship. The resultant conversations were fascinating, and often, heartwarming.
